Sent to me by email: Downtown Reno situation is sad and heartbreaking. I moved here in 1977 when the downtown area was bustling and vibrant. The casinos had showrooms with nightly entertainment. Shops and restaurants were diverse and thriving.

I feel there are many reasons for the blight and vacancies. When I arrived, the Atlantis and Peppermill were coffee shops and MGM was under construction. Eventually those properties became what they are today, sucking the life out of downtown. Then Indian gaming became a competitive issue and the decline accelerated. Folks weren't flowing over the mountain from northern California.

These are reasons and I wish I knew the solution. There was a vision at one time to build Virginia Street into a strip, connecting downtown with the gaming properties to the south. I glad that didn't happen, though I had planned on opening up a roller porno disco ping pong parlor. Maybe that's what downtown needs.
