Excellent post, Mike. I hope the Washoe Parent Coalition is successful in making changes that improve student achievement and physical health. Personally, I wish our legislature would fund a certified physical education teacher in each of our elementary schools. Nearly every day when I ride my road bike around town I see kids outside and I am always surprised at how many are overweight. As anyone will tell you, weight gain is an issue that doesn't just get better on its own. It seems that if kids spent less time in front of a screen and more time outside playing with their peers there would at least be a better chance of growing into healthier and happier adults.

Washoe County schools have found a way to spend money on ‘stuff’ and not on kids education. Nationwide we took play away from our young, sat them in front of the tv and didn’t challenge them to grow, learn. Washoe residents have to ask ‘why are our kids not learning? Why are our test scores not improving?’ One change to make is to join this coalition, another is to quit voting in the same type person to the school board.
